1 Day Class - Are you or your firm involved with renovation, repair or painting work? If so, there is an EPA regulation that affects you/your firm if painted surfaces will be disturbed during your work.

Under the EPA RRP rule that became effective in April 2010, contractors (painters, remodeling firms etc.), maintenance workers, and others performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, apartments, and child occupied facilities (child care facilities, schools) built before 1978 must be certified. In GA, child-occupied facilities are defined as residential, public or commercial buildings built before 1978 where children age six and under are present on a regular basis Also, firms offering RRP services must have at least one “Certified Renovator” assigned to jobs where lead-based paint is disturbed. There are communication, paint testing, work practice and final cleaning issues that will be new to many.

To become a certified renovator, the individual must successfully complete the Renovator initial 8-hour program Refresher course conducted by The Environmental Institute (TEI) or other EPA or State-accredited RRP training provider. For those that are currently licensed as a lead abatement supervisor you can fulfill the initial RRP training requirements by attending a RRP refresher program.

All firms performing or offer to perform RRP work must become certified (licensed). Firms can obtain certification by applying to EPA or to your State if it has an EPA-authorized RRP program. If in Georgia, this process is through the GA-Environmental Protection Division (EPD). In GA, those that will work as a Certified Renovator must also be certified (licensed) with the GA-EPD once training is completed. Firm and GA Renovator certifications (licensing) are separate matters and are in addition to attending the RRP training program. We will explain these issues in class for you. You can also reach the GA-EPD at 404-363-7026 if you would like to speak with one of their representatives.

RRP rules apply to activities where at least six square feet of lead-based paint is disturbed in a room or where 20 square feet of lead-based paint is disturbed on the exterior. Window replacement and interior demolition where lead-based paint will be disturbed, is always considered RRP work.

This 1 day course was developed by the U.S. EPA, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to train renovation, repair, and painting contractors how to work safely in housing with lead-based paint and comply with EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule, and HUD's Lead Safe Housing Rule.

Refresher classes are required. The refresher program is a 4 hour class. For those working in states regulated by the EPA, refresher classes must be within 5 years of your initial course date. In GA, you will need to take your refresher class not later than 3 years after your initial class date.

The program includes exam and a detailed course notebook with much information to explain RRP requirements including; EPA, HUD and GA-EPD issues. Please call us if you have any questions.
